Old Dominion University's Applied 研究 Center consists of an interdisciplinary team of researchers working on scientific and technological problems in the areas of thin films, laser and plasma applications, materials technology, and the emerging fields of nanotechnology, biomedical engineering, sensor science and technology, 和微机电系统. Projects at the Center are sponsored by federal agencies, the Commonwealth of Virginia, and various industries and national labs.

Throughout the year, ARC offers education opportunities and outreach activities for the public. ARC serves as a research center and a user facility and engages in education and research with numerous scientists and students from local high schools to colleges worldwide.
